Press Release

Cris Worley Fine Arts is pleased to announce Timothy Harding: New_drawings_1-21c featuring new works in acrylic on canvas and a site-specific installation in wood. The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception on Saturday, January 5th 2019 from 5 – 8 pm. New_drawings_1-21c will be on view through February 9, 2019.

Timothy Harding’s art explores the relationship between two-dimensional pictorial space and three- dimensional physical reality, which manifests in compositions that transform the traditional four-edged frame. Harding plays with the flexible qualities of paper and fabric canvas by layering multiple finishes of paint in gridded patterns to create depth-defying optical illusions. In his installations and singular objects, Harding fuses drawing, sculpture, and painting, to design artworks that appear as twisted digital screens into alternate spaces.

In this exhibition, Harding expands his previous focus on rectilinear angles to include curved lines, resembling those found on a globe, or from tracked waves of atomic particles. Recent work by Harding continues his engagement with the formal language of minimalism and pop art through his use of saturated bright colors, finished with machine-like precision, in glistening plastic surfaces.

His polished semi-industrial aesthetic follows the west coast minimalism of artists like the 1960’s Los Angeles group known as the “Cool School,” which included figures like Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, and Ed Moses, who become central to the California Light and Space movement.

Timothy Harding was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Irving, Texas. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Texas Woman’s University in Denton. Harding has exhibited for over a decade in many solo and group exhibitions across Texas. Harding was most recently awarded a residency by the Wassiac Project (Amenia, NY), and has completed residencies with the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT) and the University of Texas at Dallas CentralTrak, in the past. In 2016 he was awarded a Nasher Sculpture Center Artist Microgrant. In 2009 he was a recipient of a Kimbrough Fund Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art. In 2011 his work was included in the Texas Biennial. From 2011-2015 he was a member of artist-run cooperative gallery 500X, and a founding member of the artists collective, Homecoming! Harding currently lives and works in Fort Worth.
