Press Release

Cris Worley Fine Arts is pleased to announce our second solo exhibition of minimalistic paintings by Houston-based artist Kristen Cliburn. Color as Light as Air, opens with an artist’s reception on Saturday, February 24th, and will run through March 31th, 2018. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception.

In this recent body of work, Cliburn continues to explore color through subtle and minimal gradients, with particular attention to contrasting density and lightness, stillness and motion. In her own words, “Color floats, form dissolves, and time idles while a solitary experience of subtlety comes into view.” The ephemeral quality of each work is underpinned by provocative titles such as With Peace, Double Bind, Sub Rosa that may lead the viewer to the artist’s intentions. Each individual work exists as though emerging from air, as though pulled from nothingness into form, balancing light and color.

Kristen Cliburn received her BFA in Painting at the University of Texas, Austin and her MFA in Painting from the University of Houston. She has participated in over 50 group and solo exhibitions, including several juried shows. Selected jurors include Rock Hushka (Curator of Contemporary & Northwest Art – Tacoma Art Museum), Irene Hofmann (Director & Chief Curator – SITE Santa Fe), Dave Hickey (Independent Art Critic), Larissa Harris (Curator – Queens Museum of Art), and Miranda Lash (Curator of Contemporary & Modern Art – New Orleans Museum of Art).
