Cris Worley Fine Arts is proud to present Charlotte Smith: Shades of Pale, an exhibition of recent paintings in acrylic on canvas. This will be Smith’s 10th solo exhibition in collaboration with Cris Worley since 2003. Shades of Pale will open with a reception on November 23rd from 5:30 – 8:30pm and will be on view through December 28th.

Known for her process-driven practice of dripping and dropping layers upon layers of paint on canvas, Smith has continued to push the limits of her medium. This recent body of work marks an in-depth return to the artist’s interpretation of the “white” painting, an endeavor initially explored by modernist artists such as Kazimir Malevich and later by postmodernist artists such as Robert Ryman and Robert Rauschenberg. Though Smith’s prior paintings read “white” they often employed a variety of hues within. Shades of Pale focuses on the stripping away of contrasting color, allowing the composition to take the lead role. Inspired by the artist’s recent extended stays on the Gulf of Mexico, the rhythmic rush of ocean waves appears as a leitmotif within this series, both in the tonality of blue and green hues as well as in the fluidity of her marks, which are at once intentional and subject to the chance of each drop.
