Microscopic, opens Saturday, January 9th, and will be on view through February 13th, 2021. The gallery will hold an Open House, Saturday, January 9th from noon to 4pm. The artist will be in attendance. No appointment is required; the gallery will allow up to 10 visitors in the space at a time.
For two decades, Booker produced work under the name Paul Booker. In recent years, the artist has transitioned genders and is now known as Becca Booker. A distinctive “mark maker”, Becca has a signature line quality that is undeniably her own. Her characteristic, lustrous panel paintings are comprised of multiple layers of pigmented enamel and ink drawings, built up and embedded in nearly 100 layers of polyurethane. Frenetic, yet delicate lines swarm in various winding pathways articulated in rich color, invoking a sense of flowing movement seen in various natural formations such as biological atlas illustrations, animal flocking behavior, and fluid dynamics. Says Booker, “Through my work, I respond to visual phenomena occurring in nature as well as human interpretations of these naturally occurring forms.” These themes are also explored in her sumptuous watercolors on paper, which present a similarly unique sense of depth, form, and movement. This show sees a return to her compulsive “red arrow” works, in which movement is articulated by bright red arrows that direct the viewer around unknown curves, and through mysterious tunnels.
Becca Booker received a BFA from the University of Texas and an MFA from the University of North Texas. Following graduate school, she was a member at the oldest artist-run collective in Texas — 500X Gallery — where she served on the board. Throughout her over 20-year career, Becca has dedicated much of her time educating others, as Professor of Art at various local colleges, and in occasional sessions at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Modern Museum of Art, Ft. Worth. Her work has been shown throughout Texas, as well as in New York and California. Booker’s work has been exhibited at the Tyler Museum of Art, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Wichita Falls Museum of Art, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, and the Austin Museum of Art. Her work resides in the permanent collection of the Tyler Museum of Art.
