“Out of sheer perversity, I followed beauty where it led, into the silence.”
— Dave Hickey
Cris Worley Fine Arts is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Trey Egan: Signal/Rhythm/Solace, which opens February 19 and runs through April 2, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, February 19 from 5 to 8pm. This is the Dallas-based artist’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery.
Trey Egan is a painter with a generous eye for something we instinctively pine for in this harsh world: unapologetic beauty. Egan creates spontaneous, gentle explosions of beauty on canvas, alive with movement and gestural expression that embody both pure visual pleasure for the viewer and the painter’s nimble relationship with the lustrousness of oil paint. In the studio, the synesthetic Egan listens to music which drives a direct physical response in color and gesture onto the canvas; it is a cross-sensory process where musical input meets Egan’s visual output to produce works of enormous formal and aesthetic delight.
This exhibition showcases the continuing evolution of Egan’s singular and assured painting language. These works are celebrations of felt moments of beauty, meditation, rhythm, and emotion, and they invite viewers to consider their own such moments of unselfconscious joy. In this, Egan’s paintings serve a talismans against today’s tuneless and bitter pileups, while remaining timeless.
Trey Egan received his MFA from the University of North Texas. He has mounted nine solo exhibitions and has been included in many group shows juried by such notables as: Peter Doroshenko (Executive Director of the Dallas Contemporary), Toby Kamps (Director of External Projects at London’s White Cube Gallery), Clint Willour (the late Curator of Galveston Arts Center) and artists Annette Lawrence, Vincent Falsetta, and Erick Swenson, among others. Egan's work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections including Foley Gardere LLP, Kristin Farmer Autism Center, The Landes Group, Trive Capital, and the UT Southwestern William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, and Toyota Motor Company, Frisco, TX. Egan teaches drawing and painting at University of Texas at Dallas, Collin College, and Brookhaven College.
